A Home Barbecue is now the main outdoor cooking activity in many countries. Family and friends getting together to cook, eat and drink outside (weather permitting).

First appearing in the English language in the 1600's. It is generally accepted that the word barbecue originates from the language of the people of Florida and the Caribbean. The word translates as "sacred fire pit" and describes a grill for cooking meat.

Barbecue is now accepted universally as both the cooking technique, the cooking equipment and even the smokey flavour sauce added to meats. There is a vast degree of variation and overlap in terminology and method surrounding this form of cooking. In British usage, barbecuing (grilling) refers to a fast outdoor cooking process directly over high heat, while indoor grilling refers to cooking under a source of direct, high heat. In American usage, however, grilling refers to a fast process over high heat, while barbecuing refers to a slow process using indirect heat and/or hot smoke.

When considering a Home Barbecue there are many factors which should be taken into account before deciding on the most suitable barbecue for you. If you have plenty of outdoor space then either a charcoal or gas fired barbecue can be used safely. The larger ones will obviously require a larger clear space. If you only have a balcony or small back yard then a small portable charcoal barbecue or even a single use disposeable may be best. An electric barbecue or griddle could be the solution if space is at a premium, the smokey flavour has to be added as a sauce or marinade but they are the only ones that can be safely used indoors if neccessary.
